GoodFood
Melbourne, Australia

I am willing to suspend reality and go with the Saigon alleyway vibe they're going for here, but the service is too good, the drinks and desserts too polished, and the place too spotless to make me think I'm hearing the buzz of Honda scooters. Actually I'm not sure how many noodle shops in Saigon serve traditional Vietnamese blend coffee roasted in Australia, and San Pell, have colourful plastic place settings for children, and baskets under the squat stools for bags or coats, but I am pretty sure they're less likely to have as many Maseratis and BMW station wagons in the car park than this new inner-city shopping village has.

Time Out
Melbourne, Australia

If you think Vietnamese soups are are all a gradient of pho, you need to try the banh canh cua at Hem 27, a rich soup made with silky tapioca noodles that are similar to udon. The thick crab gravy soup is slightly spicy and tangy, with flecks of crab meat. Toppings are generous – there’s a surf and turf combo of fish cakes, mushrooms, and pork loaf – but the crowning glory is the deep fried soft shell crab. Top tip: set the crab aside or eat it quickly before it gets soggy.

The Culture Trip
Melbourne, Australia

In Vietnamese Hem means alleyway, and it’s in these inconspicuous alleyways where the best local food is found. Living up to its name, Hem 27 was listed in The Age Good Food Guide 2017 as the Best Cheap Eat in Melbourne. The menu is full of must-try meals, including thick soft-shell noodle soup and aromatic Vietnamese-style beef stew, as well as recipes passed down by owner Michael Nguyen’s mother.

Melbourne, Australia

Hem means ‘alleyway’ in Vietnamese, and in Saigon, these narrow lanes are where hawkers served the best authentic street food. Hem 27 in Melbourne Showgrounds Village recreates this delicious tradition in a clean modern setting. A small restaurant with communal tables, akin to the alley experience, where customers literally dine together.
